Apple sauce: make or buy?

Last weekend I thought it might be fun to take out a second overdraft and do a shop at Wholefoods. I’m all for raw this and organic that and la-di-dah but sweet Jesus is it pricey.

A lot of recipes I’ve been reading recently I’ve had to add to the ‘make later’ list because they all seem to need ‘organic apple sauce’ in order to resemble anything edible. People have commented on the recipes that “pureed baby food” works just as well, but something doesn’t feel right about adding baby food to my weekly shop at 24. I’m both too young and too old for it not to be creepy. Anyway.

So off I went to Wholefoods to buy this hallowed apple sauce. It was only after I’d spent the best part of a tenner on it that I realised its essentially stewed apple. Well, not even ‘essentially,’ thats literally what it is. What a mug.

But to be honest, if I’m baking a cake that needs – say – 85g of overpriced baby food, chances are that if I make it myself I’ll make too much, and then have neither the materials nor the need to store the excess. Which is one point to the bought stuff.

Then again, whilst jars and pots of ‘whole foods’ proclaim to be pure fruit, they’ve also been sat on a shelf for however long and haven’t spoiled, which is either a feat of vacuum packing, or a little bit worrying. At least when you’re making your own you know exactly what’s gone into it, and you can make it with your favourite type of apples, ensuring the end result is to your taste. One all, Wholefoods.

So I’d say this – if you’re in a rush, like most Londoners are, head to a health store and buy yourself a jar of apple sauce. If you have the luxury of having enough time to make your own, and the patience to sterilise a jar to store the excess in, then knock yourself out. Once I’ve got through the bought stuff in my fridge, I’m definitely going to give making my own a go. I’ll let you know how it goes..

Verdict: 1-1
